Welcome to Year 2 Maple Class!

In Maple class we pride ourselves on our ability to have fun with all aspects of our learning. We enjoy the day to day challenges we face and work together, as a team, to overcome these. We are determined learners and feel confident enough to ‘have a go’, even if we find something difficult! Maple is a kind, caring and happy class, which we are proud to be part of! We hope you enjoy looking through our page at all the exciting things we get up to over the year.

 Autumn Overview

We have been very busy in Maple class this term but we’ve had lots of fun. In maths, we have been learning all about capacity. We decided that we could use our fantastic measurement skills to create our own ‘snowman smoothies’! We loved mixing together the fruit juices to create our very own recipe. We used measuring beakers to make sure we measured carefully and accurately. In English, we have been learning about ‘The Mousehole Cat’. We discovered that Mowzer and Fisherman Tom’s favourite meal was ‘salmon pate’, so we decided to have a go at making our own delicious recipe. Once we were confident with the recipe, we wrote our own instructions to allow us to make it again. We loved tasting it so much, some of us even took the recipe home! Year 2 have chosen to support the RNLI as their charity this year. We thought it would be important to visit the RNLI station in Chiswick to see how the money we raised helps out. We were lucky enough to speak to the RNLI rescuers and see a real life boat too! We are having such a fun year and looking forward to Spring Term!

    Spring Overview

Maple Class have had yet another busy but exciting term! In maths, we have become ‘column method experts’! We have learned how to use the column method to help us add and subtract tricky two-digit numbers. Some of us were even able to challenge ourselves with three-digit numbers! We have also enjoyed learning about data and one of our favourite Maths Through Story lesson involved collecting and presenting data, using the book ‘Tin’.

In English, we have been learning about Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We have looked closely at the characters in this story and written some truly fabulous character descriptions. ‘The Chocolate Room’ was an exciting (and mouth-watering!) chapter in the story and we re-created our own chocolate room. As our topic this term is ‘from bean to bar’, we also took part in a chocolate workshop. We learned about where chocolate came from, became chocolate tasting connoisseurs and even created our own chocolate truffles! So much fun!

In science, we have learned lots about how humans stay healthy. We were so lucky to have a visit from Mrs McGregor and baby Frank and we had the chance to ask lots of questions like “why does a baby need milk?” and “how long do babies sleep for?”. We also made our own healthy fruit skewers, using our DT skills to design, create and evaluate these.

We have had such fun and learned lots this half term, we are looking forward to Summer term in Year 2!
