Autumn Overview

We have been very busy during our first term in Year One! We have settled in fantastically and are learning lots of new things every day. In Literacy, we have looked at ‘Peace at Last’ by Jill Murphy and ‘Dogger’ by Shirley Hughes. We have been focusing on writing super sentences using capital letters full stops and adjectives. We are even beginning to use connectives too! In Maths, we have looked at place value, addition, 2D and 3D shapes and subtraction. We have been using lots of resources to support our learning and we have really enjoyed using stories to help us with our maths skills. In Science, we have been studying materials and we created an ‘eggstraordinary eggsperiment’ to discover which material would be the best to protect Humpty Dumpty from his fall. We used a variety of materials and performed a fair test - we found that cotton wool was the best. This term we have also been on a trip to Richmond Museum to look at toys from the past to link in with our topic. We played with different toys from Roman, Tudor and Victorian times and used our detective skills to work out which time period the toys were from. In Computing, we have been developing our understanding of algorithms as well as using the laptops to create greetings cards for our loved ones. We are having a brilliant time in Year One and cannot wait to see what the Spring term will bring!

 Spring Overview

Beech Class have been non-stop over the past few weeks! In Literacy, we have looked at the story of ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ and ‘Farmer Duck’ and WOWed Miss Alderson with our wonderful writing. We also had our class assembly this term, based on the story of 'Farmer Duck'. In Maths, we have been using arrays to help us with multiplication and we have also been learning to tell the time. Our topic has been ‘Farms’ for which we went on a school trip to Hounslow Urban Farm where we met lots of different animals. We even had some animals in our classroom – chicks! We watched them hatch and grow over two weeks. We named them Picky, Pecky, Luna, Eddie, Cutie, Coconut, Toffee, Crumble, Chick-Chick and Bruce. Our favourite part of the term was our Reading Festival! We loved our bedtime book evening and dressing up for World Book Day. We also had Mini Grey come to visit us and we looked at a different one of her books each day. We even made Biscuit Bears!
